Discover Goathland

Tucked away in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, Goathland is one of those rare villages that feels like a step back in time. Where steam trains still pull into the station, sheep wander the roads without a care, and moorland paths begin just beyond the garden gate.

It’s a place that invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and reconnect with the beauty of the countryside.

Where is Goathland?

  • Goathland is nestled right in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, surrounded by rolling hills, heather-covered moorland, and traditional dry stone walls.

  • It’s just 9 miles (around 20 minutes by car) from the historic seaside town of Whitby, making it a peaceful alternative to the coast — but close enough for fish and chips and a sea breeze whenever the mood strikes.

  • The village is also well connected to nearby Pickering and Grosmont via the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, with heritage steam trains that still run through the valley.

  • For those arriving by car, Goathland is about a 1-hour drive from York or roughly 45 minutes from Scarborough.

Famous for a Reason...

You might recognise Goathland from TV and film. It starred as Aidensfield in ITV’s Heartbeat, and the Goathland Station doubled as Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

But behind the cameras, Goathland is still very much a real, working village — full of warmth, stories, and Yorkshire spirit.

What to See and Do...

Goathland is the perfect base for exploring the North York Moors, whether you’re here for walking, sightseeing, or just soaking up the scenery. Here are a few guest favourites:

  • Mallyan Spout Waterfall – A refreshing woodland walk leads to a dramatic 70-foot waterfall

  • Circular Moorland Walks – Trails begin right from the village, offering breathtaking views and peaceful paths

  • The Birch Hall Inn (in 'Beckhole') – an icon of the village, the smallest pub in yorkshire and a great stop for a pint

  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway – Take a ride on a steam train and travel back in time

  • Wildlife & Photography – Spot grouse, deer, woolly wanderers (sheep) and dramatic skies at any time of the year
