The Good Travel Scan

The 'Good Travel Scan' scores are in...

The Inn on the Moor Hotel is officially taking part in a pilot programme led by the North York Moors National Park in partnership with VisitBritain.

It’s a two-year programme which actually started back in 2025 and includes several businesses from the tourism industry who are in the North York Moors National Park.

Hotels, self-catering accommodation, food and drink producers, experience providers and many more are working together to help find ways of making tourism more sustainable, to protect and preserve the National Parks and to improve business practices along the way.

The first stage of this pilot programme was for all the businesses taking part to be audited by the Good Travel Institute. It was actually quite scary. Whilst it was initially just a series of questions, each business received an in-person review from an independent assessor and it got us thinking about how much we could be doing more to protect the environment, and our community.

The audit resulted in a scorecard, which you can take a look at here.

Honestly, we could have done better and to some extent we think we are doing better, we just didn’t realise it. But … 55% is a great starting point and we are proud of the actions that we have already taken to improve and we’re not scared to admit that we have a lot to learn on our journey to becoming more sustainable.

Let’s break down the audit for you.

What are we doing well?

Here’s what the assessor had to say…

Good Employment

“Staff receive formal contracts and training. The business works to create a supportive environment for employees, where staff can share ideas and contribute to the success of the hotel.”

Caring for Culture

“The Inn on the Moor promotes local culture through its menu, which celebrates Yorkshire culinary traditions. In the lobby, it supports local entrepreneurs by selling and displaying crafts. The hotel also uses its social media channels to share information about local events and cultural activities with guests.”

Management & Info

“The Inn on the Moor Hotel communicates parts of its sustainability journey through its website and social media channels. The hotel has begun highlighting some of its sustainability actions but does not yet have a full dedicated sustainability policy published online.”

What do we need to improve?

Here’s what the assessor had to say…

Food & Products

Whilst we already use a number of local suppliers, some of our food and products are sourced from regional suppliers. The restaurant features Yorkshire dishes using local ingredients and there are products and crafts on display promoting independent entrepreneurs but… with a score of 25%, we can do better.

We aim to replace a number of the products in our hotel room refreshment trays with more local produce and we will work to improve our storytelling so that our guests are able to learn more about the local makers whose work is on display, as well as the local producers who supply our kitchen and restaurant menu.

Caring for Climate

This one stung and we were really disappointed to score 36%. Whilst we have some energy-saving measures such as light sensors in public areas, and ensuring that the heating is switched off in unoccupied rooms, the Inn on the Moor Hotel is a very challenging building to manage. Built back in the early 1900s, and having faced many structural changes over the years, insulation is very limited.

We would love to be able to explore solar panel installation, provide EV charging points for our guests and continue to improve our energy usage as we move through the next phase of our refurbishment journey (more on that later).

So what's next?

Now that we have received our scorecard, it gives us a solid foundation to work from.

From here, we’re joining the other businesses in the pilot programme as we learn more about practical ways that we can become more sustainable, share ideas with each other and improve the experience that we offer to our guests.

Discover Goathland

Tucked away in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, Goathland is one of those rare villages that feels like a step back in time — where steam trains still pull into the station, sheep wander the roads without a care, and moorland paths begin just beyond the garden gate.

It’s a place that invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and reconnect with the beauty of the countryside.
